    Let's be honest.. this initial $599/$30mo offer is essentially Starlink's "beta test" of the device. We all know that Starlink changes their data plan offerings almost as much as people change underwear. I have no doubt that in a few months, once they get feedback, we'll see another iteration of the hardware cost, monthly fees, and data caps. And, for true nomads, the Mini can easily be run on a portable power bank via a USB-C PD port.

    I bought the same 30 watt solar charger from amazon, as I needed it for an Himalayan expedition. Having limited knowledge on solar chargers I checked if the phone was charging while I plugged in the charging cable with the panel under bright Indian summer sun and it showed charging. Thinking everything was fine I carried it on my expedition, it was then when I realised that although my phone and other devices were showing it was charging but the charging time was almost unbearably long ( mostly showed 3 days for a full charge) and all this on a hot sunny high altitude meadow. making the device useless. After returning from my expedition, I installed an amp meter app and to my shock the device under the most ideal condition was outputting less then 0.5 amp which along with the 4 volt giving in at the max 2 watt. I also learned that the device keeps on automatically disconnecting and connecting. I DMed it to the official big blue official handle on Facebook by my FB account and emailed them for a warranty claim. I haven't received any response yet. so yeah don't be so sure about the 24 month warranty.

    For me, this is not a flop. I have the residential service, and I ordered my mini yesterday. I have the roaming and home service, which is expensive! $120 for my residential and $150 for the roaming! So, for me, $30 a month to have this mini is perfect. I won't need more than 50 Gigs of data as I just need to access Wi-Fi calling, web browsing, and such, not download movies, etc. The roaming dish I have is bulky and takes up a lot of space in my truck, and when I looked at its usage, I am well under 50 Gigs of data per month. I like the versatility and compact abilities of this dish so I can take it with me almost anywhere. I am excited to get mine and free up space; easy to set up, and I can leave it on the dash of my Cybertruck. 😎

    • @freelyroaming

      I wouldn't call it a flop either. It's actually quite an achievement to have this technology available. Certainly there are a lot like you out there who needs exactly this. That's why I compared it to like a mobile hotspot add-on that cell phone companies offer in my latest video about it. But my channel focuses on living nomadically and for that audience, it is not great. But as I said in the video, I do think it's going to change in the future. Not sure it will work on the dash under the windshield of a car as the window could deflect a lot of the radio beams causing it to not be able to aim. Also it often comes from the factory with a UV film. At least that's what happened with my gen2 flat-mounted dish. But let me know if that works for you.

    You’re incorrect about the spectral efficiency. The dish is smaller so the beam generated by the beam forming is not as narrow (I’ve designed such systems in the past and size matters) and the dish uses less power so the transmit power is lower. Both reduce the signal-to-noise ratio (snr) which means that for whatever spectrum you have, you will have reduced bandwidth. The starlink system is a shared bandwidth system so if snr is lower you get less bits per said spectrum. Basically, the smaller dish which transmits at lower power eats up more spectrum per bit and thus consumes more resources that can be better utilized by bigger dishes. Bottom line - as far as SpaceX/Starlink is concerned the cost per bit for a smaller dish is higher so they can either increase the price of the plan or limit the cost by limiting bandwidth. That’s likely why while there are many use cases where a smaller dish which consumes less power is advantageous, StarLink would prefer that where a larger dish can be used - the customer would use a larger one - especially in more congested areas like cities or dense countries (or where the service is popular). The best way for StarLink to control this is with price and availability

    • @freelyroaming
      @freelyroaming 9 дней назад

      You started with the statement that I am incorrect but then you continue to explain exactly what I said.There is zero contradiction with what you wrote and what I said in the video. Except for the most important point that you did not mention. It seems you either didn't finish watching the video or didn't understand the main point. I made this video partly because of all the flawed arguments I've been seeing similar to the one you made in my last video. And now this one. I never said lower spectral efficiency is not a fact. It's just basic physics. But that is not where the flaw lies in this argument. If your experience is in designing similar systems that only tells me you likely don't have a lot of experience selling or marketing the products and services they become. Which is why these arguments you are making are flawed. In the video, I agreed that spectral efficiency is indeed lower BUT, this doesn't mean less users can be connected at the same time. Which is the ONLY measurement of loss of revenue with the current business model. At least for the Roam and Residential plans that the mass majority of the users are on. Just like the gen3 dish is more spectrally efficient than the gen2 but they don't make more money from it. Better SNR is only beneficial if you can charge a customer more for it. Spectrum per bit doesn't matter from the perspective of this business model. Only spectrum per simultaneously connected users matter. Period. Without knowing their exact network configurations, we can only speculate and base it on other telecom standards. Each satellite can process less data due to less spectral efficiency but as long as it has the same number of users connected, lower throughput makes NO financial difference. Because of that, there is zero difference to the revenue generated regardless of spectral efficiency. It's NOT a metered or tiered service by speed or quantity. It just has to be sufficiently fast. Whether it's 150 Mbps or 300 Mbps, most people who would choose to switch to the mini dish understand the slower speeds is a trade off and would not care about the lower throughput or that they are paying the same price for slower service. The business benefits is in being able to sell to MORE users, NOT if the speeds are faster or if the spectral efficiency is greater for each user. At least not yet since there are effectively no competitiors yet in this space. Greater cost per bit is only a measurement for technical efficiency in this case. But for a business model where the user pays a flat fee regardless of speed, it makes no difference. Greater number of simultaneously connected users each with sufficient speed is the only thing that matters. Congestion in crowded areas will not be solved by users having bigger dishes with faster speeds. This fact is demonstrated by them willing to sell this dish at a huge loss to areas with low user base and probably lower speed expectations. Bottom line is of course they would prefer if their system was more spectrally efficient but they can not connect more concurrent users or charge more money because of it. I don't know what you think I said but I never said that less spectral efficiency was not a fact. Go back and watch it again. It's just not a BUSINESS factor that would affect revenue for this flat rate, unmetered service. They would have never developed this dish if it did. There are technical reasons for them to improve spectral efficiency but there is no financial one. Yet. Unless of course they plan to make everyone pay per data consumed which then they might and would likely see an instant massive drop in the subscriber base from those who have less convenient but unlimited alternatives. But since neither you or I work for starlink, these are all still speculations. Regardless of how much personally similar experience either or us have in telecom.

    Nice logical explanation. I have 16S 3.2V cells x3 in parallel. The max my system will charge is 200A (with no loads) and the most the inverter will draw is 200A. Divide that by 48 cells is max 4A charging/ discharging per cell. C1 rate is 280A so 4A is equivalent to C0.014 charge/ discharge rate. Compression is NOT required for this config I would much rather allow the cells to breathe and exhaust any heat. The BMS temp probe is stuck to the upper side of a central battery and is ALWAYS at room temp, never seen it rise even 1 deg C higher even when charging full 200A. 4A is like a trickle charge for these cells.

    • @streefland
      @streefland 7 дней назад

      You should divide the current by 3, not 48, because the current is distributed over 3 strings of 16 cells. That will result in a maximum charge/discharge rate of 0.24C.

    • @ricardophelps6323
      @ricardophelps6323 7 дней назад

      @@streefland So your telling me if the total current flowing is 200A from 3x batteries in parallel then each cell has 67A flowing out? That makes no sense. The C rating is per cell, not per battery.

    • @streefland
      @streefland 7 дней назад

      @@ricardophelps6323 Exactly, there is 67A flowing through each cell, so the C rating for each cell is 0.24.

    • @freelyroaming
      @freelyroaming 7 дней назад

      The calculation is easy. Forget individual cells. Look at it as a complete pack. If you are charging a 16s3p pack with 200A, then you are using a charger that is outputting 58.4v which equates to charging output of 11,680w. Total pack capacity is 43,008Wh. Total Ah for the pack is 840Ah. 1C for this system is 840A. So 200A charge is a 0.24C. (200÷840). Technically you are charging at 0.27c (11,680÷43,008) because the charging voltage is higher than the nominal voltage (58.4v vs 51.2v) but going by theoretical c-rate in amperes 0.24c is more widely accepted.

    • @ricardophelps6323
      @ricardophelps6323 6 дней назад

      @@freelyroaming I was just using simple math if my charge controllers put out 200A total and there are 48 batteries all taking current equally then each cell takes 4.2A or 67A per 16S pack. Do you agree with that?

    Hey Dan, completed your 12V conversion and have not been successful in setting up the router to access WiFi and negate the original router. Do you have a video outlining how to set up the GL iNet router with Starlink?

    Very much look forward to your review of the XTAR-LINK EL3. I would want a different router though, and they have a kit without a router for a little less. They have a DC5521 port out for router power. The GL.iNet products have the USB C input. What would be the easiest way to feed power to the GL.iNet router from the XTAR device? Other than that it looks pretty simple. I was waiting for the Starlink Mini, but as you can see now their data plan has me looking for ways to better power my Gen 2 dish. Your conversion video was awesome and I may still go that way. I''ll be checking in for the XTAR review. Thanks for your work!

    OUPES 1200 If along with a 150W solar panel, we also connect a 100W wind turbine, with one cable (GINTOOYUN DC7909 Y Splitter Adapter Cable 14AWG DC 8mm 1 Male to 2 Female Power) both 12V, in your opinion we will have a problem? do not exceed 30 volts, which has a limit of 1200, and I do not understand where the problem will be, if they both charge the station!! The Company gives a 240W solar panel, so I don't think I have a problem, unless I exceed 30 Volts! Both together are 24 Volts. . . . . . I want to charge, even when there is no sun, but only wind.

    You are a great communicator and provide solid advice, so thanks. It’s a shame you need to boost your 12V to the dishy dualie as this will create more inefficiency. Really the product should maintain the specified output so long as the Vin does not drop below a certain threshold, say 10V. You should raise that with them as a design flaw/improvement opportunity. Cheers mate.

    Hi Guys, made my Starlink just as you told with the yaoshengadapter and with the dushy dualie. But the dich wohnt start. Checken all the cables. I took a longer cable cat8 from dicht dualie to the yaoscheng adapter. But i dont think that would be a issue. Please help because I don’t know what’s wrong.

    The Mini is less capable, much like a 3G phone over LTE/5G. And similarly, these devices will have negative impact on the total network capacity. So where the network is congested (i.e. USA), they definitely want to sell it at a premium, and minimize usage.. On the other hand, in areas with lots of capacity, there reduced network capacity makes no difference. These areas also tend to have lower average income, so being able to use hardware with less parts (and therefore less cost to build) makes sense. There's still development cost for this new design, so we can thank all the early adopters in the US for contributing toward bridging the digital divide worldwide. On top of a van, I would consider Gen3 over the Mini, way too many advantages. Since both were certified for in-motion use a couple months ago, I wouldn't be surprised if SpaceX adds some power-saving features to the Gen3 (i.e. work in "Mini mode" until there's usage).

      I am making a video about the mini. My opinion is different in that. I am fully aware of the technological aspect and I think the way most people are talking about its affect in network capacity is flawed.

    Great video thank you. For your BMS and heat issue, why not place a thick sheet piece of silicone from a cheap silicone pot holder. Also did you have to pay $110 shipping per battery?

    Thanks for taking the trouble to share this. I dropped over 1500 UK pounds on drop-in batteries for my last boat, and on my current project decided to take the smart way and build my own pack. Just yesterday I got my box of Eve 280 cells and a good BMS, and am just getting started putting it all together. I had already got it pretty much all figured out, but it was great to run through it all again, and especially to pick up hints like the plastic between the cells and the issue of heating from the BMS. Well presented band clear. Top stuff.

I made my own 12v flat mount conversion and posted it on my channel which you might find interesting because I made my own cable from the Starlink to the POE (I do need to make an updated video as well) Thanks for making this video 👍🏻

    Hay Dan. I just received my starlink Gen 3 today. I have no plans on converting it to 12v. I've seen too many people on RUclips who say they had alot of issues. I have a 3000-watt converter hooked to 200Ah batteries. When you used your converter, did you have any issues? I'm full-time and will be heading to Argentina soon, and you mentioned the 400 bucks a month once I leave the US. I agree that's ridiculous and is a reason why I waited to get starlink because Elon Musk has bipolar and constantly changes the price on everything. Overall, in your opinion, is starlink worth it being able to have internet anywhere?

    • @freelyroaming
      @freelyroaming 16 дней назад

      Yes it's a game changer for us. Getting a local plan is the way to go. But now you can only migrate after owning and using your dish for 4 months. So plan accordingly.

      @freelyroaming interesting about the 4 months. I plan on crossing the border around Thanksgiving anyway. I'm in the Montana area now, and my family is shipping the starlink to a UPS store here in Montana for me since it had to be sent to my home address. Thanks for the follow-up. I actually got to meet your whole family 2023 or 2022 OLE Flagstaff and talked with you for a good 45 minutes. Thanks again
